About Makaha

Makaha is the west side of Oahu's crown jewel, a powerful right-hand point break steeped in Hawaiian surf culture. The wave breaks over a reef and sand bottom, producing long, bowling walls that can hold massive swells. Makaha was one of the first big-wave spots ever surfed and hosted the Makaha International contest in the 1950s and 60s. The west side vibe is distinctly local—more raw and less tourist-influenced than the North Shore. On big west or northwest swells, Makaha is one of the best waves in Hawaii.

Local Tip

Respect the locals—the west side has deep roots. Big WNW swells light this place up.
